Youth educational forum against Human Trafficking – Raising awareness and public education

MISSION AND GOALS

The educational program Street Law in cooperation with the mission of OSCE in Skopje, Macedonia, started with the realization of the project “YEF against Human Trafficking – Raising awareness and public education”. The goal of the project is a preventive education of over1000 high-school students from different schools trough the country.

CONCERNING FACTS

According to the fact and figures acquired by non-government organizations and state institutions, the Republic of Macedonia is no longer merely a transit-country when it comes to human trafficking, but also both a source and a final destination. Additionally worrying is the fact that potential victims are underage, since the lower limit has come down as 14 years of age, up to 24 years. For this reasons YEF has started the campaign against human trafficking in which young people throughout the country would get the education and the preventive measure on this issue.

Project Activities
(10.09.2007- 09.10.2007)

  • The project comprised 15 Street Law trainings in 12 cities in Macedonia. The main goal of the trainings was to point out the current situation and problems, and also present techniques and measures for preventive and protection from potential slave traffickers.
  • In coordination with Debate clubs YEF organized many public debates on which high-school students will debate on this topic, every debate having an affirmative and a negative team which clash on these issues supported by arguments and facts.
  • In 4 high schools Mock Trials were organized, where on a script previously prepared by the Curriculum Sector of the Street Law program, the students played the parts of judges, advocates, public prosecutors, defendants, witnesses, victims and experts in a trial for slave trafficking.
  • A more complex and data-filled case was prepared for the students on the Law Faculty where with the support of university professors-experts in the area, a mock trial was held. The students and a preparation for the event by lectures and suggestions from the professors involved.

anti-trafficking initiatives as a Trojan Horse

there is an intersting article by Penelope Saunders on "Migration, Sex Work, and Trafficking in Persons" which elaborates on anti-trafficking initiatives as undermining sex worker rights.
