yoi08 research group: Gender Inequality in Refugee Camps
Members: Dragana
My project is about gender inequality. First I want to find information about the position of women in Serbian society and the position of women in refugee camps from Kosovo. Then I want to find solutions on how to organize women on a local level first in my city Nis. I researched women’s unemployment and inequality of women. The aim of this research is to show inequality is wrong, justice is missing in the discussion of this topic.

COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS FROM THE AUDIENCE DURING THE PRESENTATION
- You mentioned a lot of rights that women do not have. Can you be more specific? And is the reason just gender discrimination or are there objective criteria that most of the woman do not pass?
- Good project.
- It was a good presentation! Very informative.
- You stated that your research wants to show that gender inequality is wrong. You did not mention who is that you would like to convince of this?! This woud be important in order to understand what actions to take and how to communicate us/them.
- You proposed education programmes for refugee women. This to me seems to fall outside the 'civic model' and a bit imposing, as the proposal was not formulated with them and is based on your own perception about their problems.
- Did you considered booth genders when you did the research, because you just concentrated on what the female position in society is? man also count.
- Very good! Hot topic.
- How can we overcome the stereotypes about women working mens job?
- Don't you think, that creating gender equality would mean breaking of traditions and culture in society (family)?
- How does gender inequality affect you as a women and as a part of the serbian society?
- too much generalization / without specific steps that you can undertake in your community / too much feministic approach towards the issue / i didn't like that the presentaion was read in one breath (just reading) / don't you think that maybe the women actually don't wnat to change that traditional lifestyle?
- Are you going to focus on some specific target group among women in Serbia? Waht will be the start for practical action? Where are you planning to start from? What are the priorities among the suggestions made?
- I think it would be even more interesting to ask about why we need ender inequality. Is gender inequality this persistent in Serbia because of the constant turbulences in the country caused by splittings of Montenegro and Kosovo - by which the issue in question became less important and more marginale? What contributes the most to gender inequality in Serbia f.i.? Why do we need such a catgory as gender?
- The topic is very interesting for further discussion, as it opens a lot of questions connected with gender roles, compatibility of this roles with equality, differences and similarities between gender, ... Very good presentation!
- Very well presentation and research! But it would be good to think about biological differernce and some psychological facts (for example about the developement of children). And what do you think about problems of albanians in Kosovo? And do you think that the situation of refugee women will change if the whole situation don't change? But good work and best wishes for future work!
- I didn't really understand this. What's equalty for you - to have an equal salary, but not to do a military service and be a physical worker? This shows that you already have some prejudices.
- Do there is a difference between different women?
- It would be good to focus on 2-3 direct ideas (like the educational preograme for women in refugee camps).
- gender issue > cultural issue > everybodies issue
- But women cab't do all jobs like men and reverse... Feminist wants equality, but when anyone ask a women to cut a tree or fix a car will be called chauvinist... there can't be equality.
- I liked the statistical part and the discription of the situation. It would be nice if the presentence would engage into the future work related to the issue - this presentation could be a first step to practical work.
- Do you really think that the situation of women in reugee camps is going to be improved even though in developed countries women are still limited in their own respect?
- What is the question you are asking? Why you are asking this question? Why do you employ service model instead in dealing this issue? Why you think it is more suitable for this problem?
- I'm sorry but i did not understand what you really want to do. For example, if you want to do an education program then what do you want to teach there? Give self-defense courses so women could fight back against violence? Or provide vocational trainings so they would find better jobs? Or do conscioussness-raising so women become aware of gender inequality? Or., or.., or.. . How would women of different origins work together in your project? Would there be no conflicts? How would they realise that they have the same interests? Why would they work together at all?
some thoughts....
very happy to see that you are researching gender inequality! i am wondering if the topic is too broad. perhaps i would suggest only looking at the second part of your research and going directly into looking at women in refugee camps and skip the part about the inequality of all women in serbian society.
that seems very broad.
if you choose women in refugee camps it would be a nice way to focus the broader research.
i would be interested to find out what dynamics happen in the refugee camps and since there is little work in the camps, perhaps the gender relations are different than outside the camp, or in an office, or than in a school, university etc. I imagine they would be different and it would be nice to find out how women feel in the camps, what difficulties they have that men don't have and perhaps even what advantages they have.
i think it's a great research topic! good luck!
