yoi08 research group: P.A. Public Awearness
What is the public opinion around neonazism and how to influence that?
Members: Olga, Tautvydas, Monika, Paula, Anja G
We wanted to do a through research of the media in various countries (Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia, Poland, Lithuania), but we decided to focus on wikipedia which we found representative for public opinion. The second source was interviewing other YOI participants from the chosen countries. Based on the research we came up with a conclusion that the term “neonazism” is defined and understood differently in different countries.

comments and questions from the audience during the presentation
-I saw the whole project as an attempt to make a survey. I didn't see any ideas, definitions, anything... just the results or the questions you gave ...Try to do more research! And then give more conclusions.
- You said that people are subjective. That's a fact! All people are subjective. That's why we make huge research to learn about things not jsut a short questionnaire.
- Nazism is a wide spread ideology, which has many faces. The definition is sometimes inadequate because of this, but that doesn't mean that we cannot explain and operationalize it.
- Why did you use wikipedia as a source and which wikipedias did you use?
- What is the reliability of different wikipedias?
- Could you assume difficulties associated to this approach?
- Would you think to find out more about the meaning of the term "Neo-Nazi" today?
- What is the role of the state institutions in this issue? (in each of the countries mentioned)
- I really liked the comment about the youtube clips in the end.
- Why did the group choose wikipedias as the main source? How would they modify the definition?
- Very interesting topic, interesting presentation.
- Thank you very much for your interesting survey. I really do hope that you continue and integrate into the YOI network!
- good and interesting analyze for the countries involved
- could have done better and clearer conclusion of the end of the presentation.
- could have looked for other sources not only wikipedia.
- more specific steps for action could have been more useful to think about.
- Very good research, but try also to suggest some practice way of fighting against neonazism and also the ways how neonazism is spreading in different parts of society (for instance the economic connection between abusing workers from other countries. ...)
- The work the group did is opening a wide field for further work. In my opinion it forms a brief introduction of the topic, which is a good basis for research and definition. I like the way the project was done and presented!
- Great idea about wikipedia. Where will you get good quality of information about Neo-Nazi groups and their activities?
- God what did you do? You represented some facts, you didn't accomplish any agenda - I don't understand.
- I really really like the way you approached the topic and started tackling it. I think if you continue this way, this can become really crucial and important for having a detailed basis to fight neonazis internationally since their existence is not a local phenomena, but also a result of transition and needs to be fought locally as well as internationally. I hope you have the power to continue!
- Aim is not clear... For what? where to use result?
- you have a lot of twisted information in your project. make sure you present the real situation.
- How can we solve this problem? by writing on wikipedia ... or ...?
- the theme was research -> very good
- really enjoyed the mapping of terms
- I found your research questions and the focus on wikipedia very useful.
- appreciated that everyone in your group spoke
- great that you tapped into the common knowledge of the group for your research.
some thoughts...
it would be great if you could extend this research and continue it at home and get more data from a larger group of people.
i really really like the idea of looking at different graffiti in your countries and see how they are similar/different, perhaps they say different things, perhaps they use similar symbols or different symbols. not sure if you were planning to implement it but sounds great!
would be nice to have a space where all these acts of violence get documented. perhaps on this web site?
nice intervention! i like that you will change the wikipedia site, perhaps add some photos of the graffiti there!
are the wikipedia entries mainly written BY the neo nazi groups? are there entries written by them?
would be nice if you could extend your interviews outside of the yoi group when you are back home and after some time put together all your data.
would like to see more of this research in the future!
;)

Some questions for you to continue
Very interesting research so far. Good job presenting the problems. Here are some questions and thoughts for you to continue strengthening from here:
Did you rely solely on Wikipedia and your own interviews to survey public opinion? What scholarly critical sources can you also look to for this research? Wikipedia is edited by anyone in the public, so this would be a good example of a non-scholarly article. Can you think of possible sources of information and survey instruments that have already collected this data you could use?
What can be done to challenge the threats you mentioned? How does this research help you? Is there a place for a civic model intervention in challenging or overcoming these threats? Where does neo-nazism come from? Does answering this question help construct a strategy to combat it? Do democratic values contradict neo-nazi sympathizers? Why or why not?
